OVERVIEW- The what?

“OlDoor” is a home-care MVP project idea designed from inception to final design through research, ideation and UX design principles to bring out the talents of senior citizens at old age home and make them feel less isolated from the world.

THE PROBLEM- The why?

Based on the surveys, the skills of old age people spending their days on the home care often goes unrecognized and makes them demotivated. There are not enough sources to illustrate their skills and ideas, furthermore with the global pandemic crisis, the funds and revenues of the home went downhill and the home does not have any SNS advertisements or promotional deals to get the light of help.

THE SOLUTION- The how?

The idea of “OlDoor“ application was defined to bring out the hidden talents of the senior citizens by showcasing their talents to the real world through videos and featuring rewarding options like uploading their classes online and offering premium counselling & mentoring sessions which will get them a fair sum of money benefiting the organization.

CONTEXT

-a quick brief of the product

Note

Though this project was shaped with the help of the locale home-care organization,  I  initiated this idea in the first place by the inspiring story of senior citizens at "Anandam" home-care, Chennai.

Research

Field research

"The pandemic made us understand that we always have to be prepared to face anything anytime"

To  better understand the concerns and the skill sets of the elderly at the home care, 1:1 in-depth interview was conducted and questionnaire was provided.

"We want to uplift our home-care from this crisis and motivate ourselves as well as our fellow acquaintances"

Ask Questions

"Questionnaire was one of the ways to tackle some basic doubts i had or say to get connected with our skilled elderly humans out there"

15 out of 25 selected skilled senior citizens responded. In general, they were very cooperative and excited to share their skills with people.

Insights

"..People at our home are very skilled.."

"..We miss those good times when our home was filled with the outsiders ,the children & nanny.."

Based on the results from the research, the below mentioned particulars were taken into account as the initial skill-sets for the application.

Skill-sets

"The synergy combined with "Community" , "Motivation" & "Empathy" was what they all needed"

So what are the app requirements the elderly need?

UX Metrics

Once the field research was done, as a next step the 3 Product Success Metrics were defined. To ensure a better understanding the below metrics were used which goes alongside with the vision of the application.

Meet the 3 personas' !

"A conceptualization for not only the home-care funds but to better understand the psyche terms of people especially during the pandemic"

My 3 user personas' were selected mainly focused on the several tags that directly / in-directly matches the application motto.

Among a total of 6 personas, 3 of the personas with precise discoveries were scripted on digital notes and post-ups were used for mapping.

Features needed
Based on the results from affinity mapping, main requirements the users had were as follows,

  • Option for health supervision (meditation, yoga)

  • Easy payment method

  • Cooking or healthcare tips (prefer transcripts (downloadable))

  • Other activities (music class, 1:1 mental care sessions, forming communities, art class)

Brainstorming
"The phase of narrowing down the major objectives to start that sketching"
I decided to start brainstorm my ideas for the MVP with the insights collected from the previous two research processes. I categorized the theme of the application into,

Modules
Assimilating all the data and results, the following modules were framed as the modules in the first  stage,
  • Skill-sets : Explore option to choose their interests

  • Activity  : Easy access to return back to the recent task or to view history

  • Profile    : Edit profile , manage payments, rewards

  • Settings : Control notifications & auto-download options, help center and how to use steps

A detailed user flow is created to understand how the user context and the system fit together.

Wire-frames

Keeping the main features and metrics on mind, simplicity and ease of use were one of the biggest aims of OlDoor.

The wire frames were created in low-mid fidelity range in order to test with the users and for building a good prototype later.

Usability testing

The usability test was conducted with the 3 main personas of this project to get them understand the better view of the application flow.

As a result, I was able to refine what users were finding useful, and completely change up what they didn’t react well to. The users were asked to complete a few scenario-based tasks that would test the main features of the app, and were asked how they felt about the app in general. The results of the usability tests were analyzed using an affinity map.

Key findings

After getting a clear picture from the feed backs, i was able to look into both the "green stops" positive and "red stops" negative sides of the project and reworked on it.

Design changes

The key findings made me understand more about the user perspective and so i came up with few other core features to make the application more user-friendly.

  • Adding visuals to the application (color concept, illustrations, pop-ups) Color concept factors: age, types of color blindness

  • Adding instructions near required CTAs

  • Indicators to make the text layouts understandable

GUI was one of the challenges in this application especially considering the elderly, I decided to choose the color blind friendly palette accordingly.

GUI

Since color aspect plays one of the major roles in designing the experience, black-gray monotone colors were used for the initial approval of the iteration.

What's next ?

Shaping this idea was really challenging and for the next steps, I would like to explore more features including,

  • Implement the full fledged GUI guidelines

  • AI voice assistant to play the podcasts, or to read out the instructions from music class

  • Expanding MVP to various NGOs  and Home-Care

  • Live video sessions for all the skill-sets

The lesson

Opening my project up to my users, and to the senior citizens at the home-care who has helped me throughout this project gave me access to experiment my way forward through usability testing and to new perspectives such as,

" Color psychology aspects     Empathy     Desirability

Product success metrics "
